How to get rid of acne

At one point or another, whether from stress, hormones or genetics, most people suffer from acne outbreaks. Despite popular belief, pimples and acne does not mean the the skin is unclean or dirty. As a matter of fact, over-cleansing can irritate skin and aggravate acne even more. Here are some steps on how to get rid of acne and have healthy, glowing skin once and for all.

Emergency treatments to get rid of acne fast:

Acne spot treatment:
If there are only a few pimples, spot-treatment is better than spreading acne agents all over the skin that can be very drying. Here are some homemade and store-bought options:

  • Benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide both kills bacteria that induce acne and peels skin layers. This peeling will encourage new healthy layers of skin. Studies have shown that a lower concentration of 2% – 2.5% is as effective, with less skin irritation that a 5% – 10%, so using a less concentrated formula is better and can save money. Benzoyl peroxide should be applied in dabs on spots and left overnight and can also be applied before putting on make up.
  • Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid causes skin to peel rapidly and kills bacteria, this leads to the re-growth of healthy, new skin cells. Salicylic acid should be applied in small dabs directly on the pimples and a small amount of the surrounding area. For best results, leave on overnight during sleep.
  • Aspirin:  Aspirin is good for pimples are red and irritated since it is a anti-inflammatory. To apply, crush and grind up aspirin as finely as possible then add drops of water at a time and mix until a thick paste is achieved. Dab the aspirin paste directly onto the pimples and let it dry. Leaving the paste on overnight during sleep will produce best results.
  • Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial that can assist with clearing out clogging microbes from the skin. To apply tea tree oil, put a small amount on a cotton swab and dab on pimples and effected areas. Be careful not to apply too much because tea tree oil can burn the skin and increase redness when used excessively.
  • Toothpaste: Toothpaste is a great alternative in a pinch if none of the above products are immediately available. Dab a small amount of toothpaste enough to cover pimples and a small amount of surrounding area to dry them out and leave it on overnight. Lack of oxygen will typically make pimples smaller and less noticeable.
  • Steroid injections: This is a good method for eliminating pimples before a big event such as a Prom dance or graduation. Only dermatologists can apply steroid injections and they can dramatically reduce big pimples in less than a day. Steroid injections are approximately $150 per shot.
  • Avoid “picking” or “popping”: Avoid the temptation to attack pimples with brute force. Popping and picking at pimples is very tempting but the bacteria from fingernails only worsens and prolongs the situation and can lead to permanent scarring. Although very difficult, practice patience and know that pimples are temporary and will go away faster if treated properly and left alone.

Acne treatment for larger areas:
Good news! It’s still treatable if there is a breakout across the face instead of a few pimples. Treatment is not immediate but it is possible to reduce the swelling redness.

  • Salicylic acid: There are several face washes that contain salicylic acid designed to be used over the entire face. Such washes are designed to kill bacteria and encourage the skin to shed and grow new skin cells. After cleansing the face and neck, it’s best to gently pat dry skin with a soft towel instead of rubbing or scrubbing the skin.
  • Exfoliate wash: Using gentle exfoliants wash away dead skin cells and cleanse the skin. For best results, lightly scrub in small circles focusing on the nose, cheeks, forehead, around the lips and the chin area. Rinse the exfoliant wash with warm water and gently pat dry with a soft towel and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the skin with a towel. There are several exfoliants to choose from or a homemade exfoliant can be made with backing soda, a pinch of sugar and some water.
  • Get some rays: Exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays tighten the skin and can eliminate some of the bacterial that causes acne. Spend 10 to 15 minute increments in direct sunlight and be sure to avoid spending extended time in the sun so that the skin burns. Sun is especially helpful for acne that is on the back and shoulders. Over exposure to the sun will cause evaporation of the skin’s natural oils resulting in the body producing more in the days following which can cause more acne.

Long-term solutions of how to get rid of acne:

Sleep: Sleep is important to maintain hormones and avoid hormonal changes that can cause pimples and skin breakouts. Eight hours of sleep every night is optimum for the body to de-stress, relax, have a full cycle of REM (rapid eye movement).
Lower stress: Stress is part of most people’s life, however actively practicing stress reducing activities such as yoga, a physical exercise routine and even sex which has been proven to lower cortisol levels and increases happy chemicals in the brain such as testosterone, estrogen, dopamine, and pheromones.
Consistent cleansing: Maintaining a consistent cleansing schedule will reduce oils from the skin and hair.

How to tie a bow tie

Having a tied bow tie apposed to a clip-on bow tie does have a more refined look and really polishes a nice tuxedo outfit. However, tying a bow tie is a bit trickier than tying a straight necktie, but once it’s understood how to tie a bow tie, it’s a piece of cake. One very helpful item when learning how to tie a bow tie is a clearly illustrated step-be-step guide, such as the one provided here on Ask Phil. And although it’s helpful to have this illustrated how to tie a bow tie guide, it still does take practice to master the art of tying a bow tie.

When to work?

For the vast majority of the world, working is part of a large portion of life. Work provides financial gain to purchase survival items such as shelter, food and water and items to make life more comfortable, more entertaining and for luxuries. When to work can essentially come down to covering the basic necessities for essential survival needs for themselves and people that are dependent on them.

When to work can also be decided on personal lifestyle desire. For example:

  • If someone desires a low stress lifestyle, they may choose to work a lower paying job to save money and travel
  • A business executive that dedicates them self to working long hours but has too many responsibilities to take extended time off work
  • Working overtime at a job to save for something
  • Working more than one job to keep up with household expenses and support children

When to work is really determined by culture, financial necessity and lifestyle desire. Working also gives many people a feeling of productivity and keeps them from getting bored and unmotivated. Work is something that whether financially driven or simply for communal benefit is required for society to function. Without people working, every person would have to do every task to survive, such as obtain water, hunt for meals, ensure shelter, protect mates and children, etc. Work and assigned tasks is one of the corner stones of modern society and things such as tools, the mechanical revolution and the technological revolution. If the people that invented such marvels didn’t have the time to think and invent because they spent all their time on basic survival, people would likely still live in much more primitive conditions. Instead people took on tasks to support the community, however, their must be some reward or people would discontinue these tasks. This reward now is typically financial which is traded for necessities and desired goods.

How many grams in an ounce?

There is 28.35 grams (metric system) in 1 ounce (British Imperial and US Standards for weights and measures). Both the gram and the ounce are measurements of mass.

The gram (or alternative British English spelling: gramme) is a metric system unit of mass, the word gram originates from the Late Latin word gramma, which means a small weight. The original definition of gram was “the absolute weight of volume of pure water to the cube of the hundredth part of a meter, and at the temperature of melting ice.”  The current definition of a gram is “one one-thousandth of the SI base unit, the kilogram, or 1×10−3 kg. A gram was used at the base unit of mass in the original French metric system and the centimetre-gram-second (CGS) system of units that proceeded the original French metric system.

The ounce (abbreviation: oz) is a form of measuring mass, has several definitions, the most common of which being a unit of measurement equal to approximately 28 grams. described  originates from the Latin word uncia, meaning a unit of measurement equal to one-twelfth (1/12) of a Roman pound called a libra. Ounce was introduced into modern language first in Old English as ynsan or yndsan through an unattested Vulgar Latin form with the c before i, then ounce was used in Middle English through Anglo-Norman and Middle French (unce, once, ounce). Now the ounce is used in many different measurement systems, including measurements of mass that form part of the United States customary, and imperial, systems. The size of an ounce varies between systems. The two ounces most commonly used today are the international avoirdupois ounce and the international troy ounce.

Other instances of how many grams are in an ounce:

  • 28.35 grams =  1 avoirdupois ounce
  • 31.10 gm = 1 troy ounce – is used for weighing precious metals such gold
  • 29.57 ml = 1 fluid ounce

How many weeks in a year?

A standard year, without a leap year, consists of 52 weeks. A week is a time unit consisting of seven days. There 365 days in a year, 52 weeks in a year and 12 months in a year. Year’s that begin on a Thursday and leap years that begin on a Wednesday have 53 weeks. In most parts of the world the week is the accepted time period used for work and rest days schedule.

Sometimes the term “week” is expanded, referring to other time units consisting of days, for instance, historically a week consisting of 4-10 days has been used in different parts of the world. A period of time consisting of more than days is not typically termed as a “week” since it is closer to a fortnight (a unit of time equal to fourteen days or two, seven day weeks) or a month.

The origin of the English word “week” is derived from the Old English term “wice” which stems from a Germanic term “wikon” from the root “wik.” The term “wik” means to “move, turn or change.” Prior to the acceptance of the Roman calendar, the word “wik” may have had other meanings such as a “series of successions.”

There is evidence of people using a seven day week dating back to the Jews of the 6th century BC  during the Babylonian Captivity. Both Babylonian religions and Judaism used a seven-day week for the organization of a time schedule.

Why is the sky blue?

When looking up at the blue sky many people wonder why the sky is blue. As a matter of face, it has been pondered for a long time and actually took quite a while to figure out. Although the sun looks white when looked at in the earths atmosphere, it actually consists of all the colors from the rainbow.

A prism is a special shape of crystal that when white light shines through it the light gets separated into all of it’s colors. Light is energy that beams around the entire universe, and like the energy waves in the ocean, light also travels in waves. Some of the light travels in short and choppy waves, where other light travels in long and more even waves. For example, blue light waves are shorter than those of red light waves. Each color of light waves have different wavelengths in which they travel.

Why is the sky blue? Light prism

Light travels in a straight line unless something interferes with it, for instance, a mirror reflects light, a prism or gravity bends light, and molecules like those in the gasses of the Earth’s atmosphere scatter it. When the light from the sun reaches Earth’s atmosphere is gets scattered in all directions from the particles and gasses in the air. The blue light gets scattered more in the atmosphere than others because the blue light waves travels in shorter, smaller waves, which is why the blue sky is what is seen most of the time.

Why is the sky blue? Light diagram

As the sun gets closer to the horizon, the blue sky fades to a lighter blue or even white. This is because the light from the sun low in the sky has to pass through even more air and all those additional air molecules scatter and re-scatter the blue light many times and in many different directions. In addition to the light molecules, the Earth’s surface reflects and scatters the light, making the colors mix again creating more white than blue.

Why are some sunsets red?

Why is the sky blue? Red sunset

Since the light of the sun has to pass through much more atmosphere when it’s low on the horizon, it gets much more scattered. This scatters the blue light even more which allows the red and yellow light to pass through. When it appears that the whole Western sky seems to glow it’s from the larger particles of pollution, dust and water vapor in the atmosphere which reflect and scatter even more of the red and yellow light waves.

How to lose weight

Whether for reasons of physical appearance, doctor recommended for health issues or just to promote general good health for prolonged life, weight loss is something many people are concerned. Looking like an underwear model or lingerie model is not what’s important (nor is it even possible for some people’s body type), but maintaining a lower weight in proportion to height and size of body has time proven health benefits for a longer life with prolonged agility.

Crash diets and fad diets

Fad diets and crash diets simply don’t work for long-term results. A fad diet will typically promote fast weight loss by drastically altering food and liquid. Sometimes these diet alterations are dangerous and can do bodily harm such as high protein no carbohydrate diet in the 1970’s which caused people to develop liver disease.

The key to fast weight lost

Save time and get fast weight loss results from home with a healthy diet and some moderate exercise on a regular basis. With a healthy diet and consistent physical exercise activity, a person can safely lose 3 or more pounds per week. That’s 30 pounds or more in just 10 weeks! By burning 500 calories more than what is eaten a day for 1 week, a person can safely expect to lose 2-3 pounds in that week.

Amount and type of food intake

Eating less combined with regular exercise are the two factors that will really get weight loss on the fast track. For example, if daily calorie intake is 1,100 – 1,300 per day and exercise one hour daily it can be expected to lose 3-5 pounds per week. One technique to eat less is to drink at least 24 oz of water with each meal and not eat until completely full. Most people will feel full in about 5-10 minutes after eating. Anything less than 1,100 calories per day is not recommended, can be dangerous and lead to health issues down the road.

What to eat to lose weight

One of the first steps for losing weight is to immediately reduce salt and starches which will reduce water retention. This reduced fluid retention can result in up to 5 pounds lost when starting to lose weight. A diet of reduced added sugar, starches, animal fat from meat and dairy is recommended for rapid weight loss and how to keep weight off. A staple diet of fruit, vegetables, egg whites, lean meat such as skinless chicken breast, fish, 95% lean meat and skimmed, non-fat dairy foods will promote fast weight loss and keep the weight low.

Diet for fast weight loss

  • Eat vegetables of help feel full. Raw vegetables is the best way to get the most nutritional value from them. A moderate amount of a low calorie, low fat and low salt dip or dressing can make them more interesting, but be sure and limit the amount of dip or dressing as they can contain high calories, salt or fat and can add up very quickly.
  • Drink plenty of water. Water is very important for weight loss, especially drinking water instead of sugary sodas.
  • Avoid sugary soda and juice. If something more interesting than water is desired, iced tea can be a great alternative. Iced tea can be made from all types of tea, some that are non-caffeinated and naturally sweet. However, water should be drank with all meals and throughout the day to avoid food and sugar cravings between meals and to maintain hydrated.
  • Keep busy and remain active. By keeping busy a person burns more calories if moving around and will not eat out of boredom.
  • Eat from a moderate portion of food. Dish up plates of food enough for a meal while seated at a table only. Nibbling or grazing while standing in front of cup board, pantry or fridge can add a large amounts of extra fat and calories, especially if it’s “snack” food, such as cookies, crackers and chips loaded with salt and high fats, including partially hydrogenated oils.
  • Avoid trans-fat. Partially hydrogenated oil is called a trans-fat, which stands for transformed fat. Oil is injected with hydrogen, expanding the product, thus making the product less expensive. The body must work much harder rid the body of the excess hydrogen consumed and eliminate the fat, this makes it much harder to burn calories and lose weight.
  • Eat three meals a day. It has been proven that eating a healthy breakfast, a mid-day meal and an evening meal promotes a faster metabolism and weight loss.
  • Avoid snacking. Instead of snacking, eat an small in-between “meal” of fruits, vegetables, high-fiber grains with lots of water to curb hunger cravings.

Keep a food journal for weight loss

Write down everything eaten throughout the day. This can really help keep a weight loss plan on track. It’s helpful to keep a log, however even if what is eaten on a napkin or a piece of paper and thrown away after a meal is still an important tool to promote consciousness of food intake and personal accountability resulting in faster weight loss. Another important factor to write down in a food journal is what the mood was before eating. If the mood was sadness, anger or boredom this can be a sign of emotional eating. If a pattern of habitual emotional eating is discovered upon analyzing a food journal, changing both eating habits and the way a negative mood is dealt with and consider talking to a counselor, which can be great to just talk things out and discover more productive and healthy ways to handle emotions.

What is love?

What is love? Love can be explained as a magical force that’s as mysterious and essential to human existence as gravity itself. Talking to different people about what love is will bring about many different answers, and even much debate, because like gravity, love is more of a theory than an exact definition of what it is. This is why asking a scientist, philosopher, parent, lover or priest what love is will render such different answers. Whether derived from science or inner-spiritual belief, love is something that one must meditate upon and personally experience to know what it is.

Biologically speaking, love is simply a neurological synapse in the brain. The electrical charge of love creates a permanent and intense hunger in the human spirit. People don’t have control over this sometimes unconditional sensation, inspiring the saying “love is blind.” Not so surprising when considering that the biological experience of love is just chemistry. Although the passionate sexual desire of lust releases an intense release of chemicals such as testosterone and estrogen, what is considered “true love” releases many more chemicals such as dopamine, pheromones, serotonin, norepinephrine, vasopressin and oxytocin. From a survival perspective, the feeling of love promotes evolutionary growth for longevity of sustained human life by encouraging long-term relationships for parental support. This mutual-force of parental support creates an environment for children to be safe, to feel secure and to learn survival skills for the world, hence continuing the cycle of human existence.

Love is likely something that man has pondered upon since the beginning of congregation and conscious thought itself. In ancient times people had different words for love, instead of one word that covers all the different types of the feeling. Some of the words for love include:

  • Philia – A deep, typically non-sexual love shared between close friends, family or the bond of soldiers that fought beside each other in battle.
  • Ludus – Light, playful affection that is displayed in flirtatious way.
  • Pragma – Mature love of a long-term couple that grows over a long time of time which involves the practice compromise, understanding, goodwill and commitment.
  • Agape – The generalized love of humanity and the universe.
  • Philautia – Self-love. Not to be mistaking for selfish love, self-love is the love of one self, making it possible to love others.
  • Eros – Passionate, sexual desire. Although very intense and can cause much trouble, eros will burn itself out unless it grows into a deeper state of love, such as pragma or philia.

The existence of love is all of the states mentioned above. However, experiencing all the states of love from one person is not how love works, which is why people socialize with friends, family seek mates and join sports teams for camaraderie; to achieve all the different states of desired love.

The true nature of what love is will forever remain an elusive theory because love is not a physical thing that can be analyzed in a lab. All that scientists can do is examine the way our brains react when love is felt. Each state of love has it’s own different qualities on whether it’s love for a parent, siblings, one’s country, a higher power such as God or a passionate love for example. Each state of love typically has particular traits that are common for the type, such as the unconditional love from a parent, the fickle or one-sidedness of a sexual love, the reciprocated and steadfastness of a long-term love or the blind and tragic of true love for one that doesn’t reciprocate the love or for a person of a bad character.

All forms of love help nurture people and promote the evolution of the human race, and each type of love plays an important role of human existence. Without the passionate love, people would have only commitment and less desire to reproduce. However, without the long-term commitment love, there would be merely infatuation and likely a shallow outlook upon the world. And above all, without nurturing love surely even the strongest of man would wither and cease to exist.

As with the perception life itself, love depends on what state a person is in. If love is stable and secure, existing in it can go unnoticed like breathing. However, if a person is deprived of it, love can become an obsession that consumes the spirit and can even bring physical pain. Of the greatest stories of all time, love is the theme. Not simply the romantic love stories such as the famous Romeo and Juliette, but the love of family, parental love and love of a country. Fascinating is how consuming it can be, how in a moment one’s life can be consumed and dedicated despite any obstacle that may stand in the way. This deep inspiration of passion is what inspires in the heart of man to say “love is everything.”
