What is an iPhone? An iPhone is a brand of cell phone with internet capabilities (commonly referred to as a “smartphone”), developed and marketed by the Apple corporation. Appealing features of the iPhone are the touch-screen functionality and stream-line design. The iPhone was unveiled and demonstrated for the first time on June 29th, 2007 by former CEO Steve Jobs.

The iPhone can function as a cell phone, a camera, a video camera (not until the release of the 3GS was video recording a standard feature) a portable media player, it can receive visual voicemail, send and receive text messages, send and receive email and has web-browsing capabilities with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The iPhone uses multi-touch-screen technology with a virtual keyboard instead of a physical keyboard with buttons. Software, known as an “app,” is developed by Apple as well as thrid-party app developers and available from the App Store, which was launched in 2008 and now offers over 400,000 Apple approved apps. iPhone apps serve many different functions ranging from GPS navigation, games, social networking, security, GPS tracking, restaurant references, listening to streming music, watching streming video and more.

Four generations of the iPhone are currently available with the 5th generation expected to be released at Q3 in 2011 accompanied by the release of the iOS 5.0 operating system for handheld devices, likewise, each other iPhone generation had an accomaning iOS, fomerly known as the iPhone OS. The first iPhone was a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phone that set a design trend that remains consistent through all iPhone models such as the screen size, virtual keyboard with no physical keyboard and main button placement.
