What is an organ?

Without the use of any modifiers, an organ is wind instrument with a keyboard for the musical notes to be played and foot pedals. When the keys on the keyboard are pressed it produces wind through timbres, which are called stops. These are arranged in four different family groups: flutes, strings, reeds and principles.

The instrument called a barrel organ is one that in some of its incarnations, provides music in clocks. Typically a barrel organ is a small pipe organ with a pinned wooden barrel that is turned by a crank. This is to provide both air and to rotate the barrel and its pins across keys that get engaged. One type of barrel organ is a bird organ which is meant to be used with caged birds, intended to make the birds sing.

There are also electronic organs, this is pipeless keyboard organ with many of the features found on a pipe organ. An electronic organ is able to play chords, sustain tones and crescendo and decrescendo on sustained tones. Many electronic organs have a variety or timbres to choose from similar to pipe organs. Electronic organs also combine pickups or transducers to create sound.

Another type of organ is a fairground organ. Fairground organs are used on merry-go-rounds or carousels. The original type of organ that was used for this purpose was a barrel organ, however later organs more like a piano player was developed. A generic term for instruments that vibrate freely with a keyboard and a reed that vibrates freely is a “reed organ.” Some instruments considered reed organs are concertinas, accordions or “mouth organs” more commonly known as harmonicas. A stream organ, also known as a calliope, is an instrument that uses a pinned cylinder and steam whistles to produce sound.

Other uses of the word organ refer to parts of an organic body, such as the lungs, liver, kidney or heart or an organ can refer to a newspaper, paper, journal, periodical, magazine, newsletter, gazette, publication or mouthpiece.

What is art?

It is difficult to exactly define the word art, especially in today’s modern society. It means many different things to different people. What art is to one person may not be considered art to another person. Art is like the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” it is truly in the eye of the beholder.

The teaching of art in art schools is mostly in the area of fine arts, painting and craftwork. It’s taught to experiment and bring new concepts, ideas and images of originality to one’s work, however typically proves to be a problem when defining the concept of art because of the fact art is purely subjective. Therefore, if an instructor does not care for something that is completely original the student may receive a poor grade on the project even though the student brought something completely original and unique.

To conceive and create something completely original and has never been seen before is what every artist typically strives for. However, this new visual can sometimes confuse people and can take time for them to understand and appreciate it, if at all. For example, when abstract art was introduced to the world, most people did not understand it and did not consider it art, and some people still do not, nor ever will, consider it art.

Some artists attempt to display every day life, either personal or other people’s lives, through their work. Some people consider this just to be just every day images of nothing more than every day life that anyone could create.

The matter of perception is the main is the main reason most people do not understand or accept art. Since new and completely unique art has nothing to compare it to, people can find it very confusing. Once people have had time to absorb new art, they can sometimes accept and appreciate it. Abstract art, once it had time to be understood, began to get much more appreciation and value.

Art is something of many different forms and mediums; there is painting, sculpture, pottery, music, cinematic films, photography, writing or dance to mention a few. The amount of work that has gone into a finished art piece is not considered in the price of the work, instead it’s the creative originality and perceived value that it represents.

Some art works are purposely made to be provocative and shocking to arose a reaction. This is to cause people to get an emotional reaction, think and talk about the work. For example, a fashion designer will make outrageous designs for runway shows that would have no practical use to get a reaction to their new line of clothing. An auto manufacturer will make wild concept cars to attract attention to their brand, and an artist may purposely create controversial works to arose emotional responses and gain attention to their body of work.

A goal of many artists are to have people view thinks in a different way or to get an idea or point of view expressed in a way that inspires people to think and discover meanings. For this very reason many artist’s works have been destroyed by governments because they did not want their people gaining new and inspired thoughts jeopardizing control. Some artists have even been banned or incarcerated for creating things that the government did not approve of.

Art is a reflection of both the artist’s personal experiences, views of the world and record current culture in a completely unique manner. This is why art continues to evolve, say something new and bring something fresh to the world. After all, if art it did not evoke thought and passion and bring something new, what would be the point?

Swollen hands

Swollen hands is a discomfort many people suffer from for various reasons. An injury can sometimes be to blame, however medical conditions can also cause swollen hands. There is also a condition called edema that is caused from small blood vessels leaking fluid into the surrounding tissue.

Another common cause of swollen hands is arthritis, the symptoms include both swelling and pain in the joints. If arthritis is the suspected cause of swelling, seeking advise from a doctor may be a good idea. A doctor can run tests and take x-rays to determine if there is arthritis, what type arthritis and what treatments are available.

Certain types of medical condition may also cause swollen hands, such as kidney disease. Although swollen legs are much more common, but kidney disease can also cause swollen hands. Cancer or other serious medical conditions can also cause swollen hands, especially if it’s lymphatic because the lymphatic system helps eliminate the body of fluids.

Swollen hands can also be caused by the use of certain medications. Some medications that can cause swollen hands are estrogen treatments, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some diabetes medications that can cause fluid to leak from blood vessels. Drugs that open blood vessels or calcium antagonist medications can cause edema resulting in swollen hands.

Either a lot of activity or lack or activity can also cause swollen hands. For example, sitting in the same position for long periods of time can cause edema. Strenuous exercise can cause hand swelling because it causes blood flow to the muscles, heart and lungs and decreases blood flow to the hands and other parts of the body. Heavy sweating can also cause swelling because fluid loss that occurs.

Diet can also cause swollen hands, especially a diet very high or very low in sodium. Consuming high levels of salt can result in blood vessels leaking fluid in the surrounding tissue. Drinking a large quantity of water especially combined with vigorous physical activity, such as running a marathon, can reduce sodium levels or even cause hyponatremia, an electrolyte imbalance. Other signs of hyponatremia are vomiting and confusion.

During pregnacy, women may experience swollen hands as a result of a premenstrual symptom. Both pregnant and premenstrual women will typically experience water retention throughout the entire body.

If a person experiences swollen hands for extended periods it is a good idea to get a medical examination to see if there is a more serious medical condition causing the swelling.

Republican Party

The Republican Party, commonly known as the GOP (“Grand Old Party”), is one the major political parties of the United States, the Democratic Party being the other. The Republican party was founded in 1854 by anit-slavery activists and for the most part nationally dominated politics from 1860 through 1932. Of the US presidents, 18 have been Republican, the first of which was Abraham Lincoln, who served from 1861 to 1865, and the last at the time of this article was George W. Bush, who served 2001 to 2009 before Barack H. Obama, who defeated Republican Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts Governor.

American conservatism is what the party’s general position is based on, apposed to the contrasting more liberal position of the Democratic Party. The Republican Party’s position of American conservatism does not completely reject political ideology of liberalism as some fundamental principles of American conservatism is based on classical liberalism. For the most part, the conservatism of the Republican Party is based on its position against the modern liberalism of the Democratic Party. This modern liberalism of the Democratic Party is considered American liberalism of contemporary American political discourse.

The Republican Party holds a majority of seats in the United States House of Representatives and a minority of seats in the federal Senate of the 113th Congress which was elected in 2012. The Republican Party also currently holds the majority of governorships and the majority of state legislatures.

Democratic Party

The Democratic Party is one of two major political parties in the United States, the other being the Republican Party. The Democratic Party has promoted a social liberal, social democratic and a progressive platform since 1930 and the Democratic Party’s Congressional caucus is assembled of left-wing libertarians, centrists, liberals and progressives. The Democratic Party has the longest standing record of continuous service in office and the one of the oldest political parties in existence. Barack Obama, the current President of the United States, is the President belonging to the Democratic Party. Although the Democratic Party has the majority of seats in the Senate, the Democratic Party is the minority of seats in the House Of Representatives and state governorships and control of a minority of state legislatures as of the 2010 elections.

US Constitution

On May 14, 1787, the Federal Convention convened in the State House (known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation. At first, only the delegations from two states appeared, so the members would continually adjourn until a quorum of seven states was present on May 25, 1787. The articles were reviewed and by mid-June it was decided that instead of amending the existing Articles, the Convention would draft a new form of government. The new US Constitution was drafted in closed sessions all through the remaining summer of 1787. There were many very important issues being debated, including the amount of power the central government has, how many representatives each state has, how such representatives are to be elected – either from within the government or by the people. The US Constitution is a perfect example of statesmanship and willingness for compromise.

What is civil war?

Civil war is a war that is between organized groups of citizens within the same country, nation state or republic. Although less common, a civil was can also be a war between two different countries that were created from a former united controlling state. A civil war typically occurs to gain control of land, to achieve independence or to chance government policies. The words “civil war” are derived from the Latin words “bellum civile,” referring to the civil wars that occurred in the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC. Civil war is a very high intensity battle, generally involving armed forces. Civil war can consume huge resources and end with a high number of casualties greatly damaging the stability of a country for years after the civil war occurred.

Since the end of World War ll, civil war typically lasts four years, a big contrast from the average being one and one-half years between the years 1900-1944.

What is Democracy?

Democracy /deeˈmah kreh see/ is an organization, government, or group that is controlled by the majority of its eligible members. The root of the word democracy is the Greek word δημοκρατία(dēmokratía), which means “rule of the people” from around 400 BC, this was to represent the political systems that existed during that time.

Democracy as a form of government is when all eligible citizens have a say in the decisions of how the land is governed. In a democracy each person is allowed an equal vote and to participate directly, or through elected representatives, for the creation of laws and development. Democracy allows the ability to practice self pursuit of social, economic and cultural growth.

Democracy is in contrast to monarchy, where power is controlled by one person, or oligarchy or aristocracy where power is held by a small number of people. Many modern governments are a mix of democracy, oligarchy and aristocracy. Democracy allows people to have control of the people that rule and lead them, and allows the removal of such people of authority without requiring a revolution.

What is gravity?

Gravity is a field of influence that controls how things behave in the universe. For example, if something is dropped, it falls towards the Earth instead of up into outer space. Gravity is also to be said that which keeps matter together, matter being what humans measure by mass, mass being what humans associate to touch. The more massive something is, the more matter it has, which in turn creates more gravity. So massive objects, such as planets and stars, have huge amounts of gravity or “pull.” Since stars are so massive and have so much gravity, planets will orbit them making galaxies such as the one planet Earth exists in. Other than mass, the amount of distance from something also plays a part in gravity, which is why things remain on Earth instead of flying off into outer space and into the gravitational pull of the Sun.

Something interesting to be theorized about gravity is that it is not only pulling down, it’s actually pushing in every direction in different amounts. The gravitational field of the Earth keeps us on it, however, we can defy it for a moment, by jumping off the Earth. If gravity was only pulling us down, we would no be able to lift off the ground and things would not be able to float, such as hot air balloons. Gravity can also be thought of as an outside force “pushing” in every direction, holding or pressing mass together.

Items of a smaller mass, such as humans, can not move massive objects such as the planet Earth. However, massive objects, such as the planet Earth, can plant people face first in a moment. Another contributing factor for gravity is inertia. Inertial creates gravity as well, for instance, if two people on roller-skates throw a ball back and forth, they will get pushed back farther each catch because the ball travels father. This is because the ball traveled farther each throw creating more inertia.

Albert Einstein, a scientist who lived in the 20th century, theorized that gravity is what happens when space itself is around a large mass, such as a star or a planet. So a star or planet would bend space and things would fall into them if they got within their gravitational pull. Experiments have been performed to prove that Einstein was right about this theory of gravity, however there are many questions that even Einstein could not answer. For instance, gravity being force which causes matter to be attracted to other matter, then why atoms are mostly empty space. In fact, an atom has very little matter in it at all. Also, it has not been explained how the forces that hold atoms together differ from gravity.

To date, gravity has not been defined as to what it actually is, only how it behaves. Some scientists explain gravity as being made up of particles called “gravitons” which travel at the speed of light and effect all known matter including light. However, it’s not truly known what gravity “is” in a fundamental way – only how it behaves and effects things in the universe. Therefore, the best explanation of gravity is a force created from massive objects in the universe.

What is Oncology?

Oncology is a type of medicine that specializes in the treatment of cancer. A medical professional who practices in the treatment of cancer is called and oncologist. An oncologist must be trained for different types of cancer and to diagnose the best treatment for each type of cancer.

A practicing oncologist may also specialize in the treatment of a specific type of cancer. When diagnosing, an oncologist trains to detect cancer and what type from the symptoms of the patient. To make accurate diagnosis, an oncologist determines which tests should be performed to best advise a treatment plan. The treatment may consist of a single treatment or multiple treatments. Oncology is a field that typically requires an ongoing study due to the consistent changes of causes and treatment of cancer. This way, an oncologist remains up to date with all the current research about cancer to best treat patients.

Once an oncology student completes training, specific exams must be passed to become a board certified oncologist. The exam will be both written and oral as we as a review of the oncology candidate’s work. The main oncology fields of practice are chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgical treatment. There are also specific treatments of cancer such as brain cancer, children’s cancer or in gender specific organs.
